Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcome at Eden and water is available for them around the site. Find out more about bringing dogs to the Eden Project.

Wheelchairs

We welcome all types of mobility vehicles and we also have a number of manual wheelchairs (approx 40) which are free of charge and available to borrow on a first come first served basis (*booking isn’t necessary for the manual chairs*). These chairs are stored in the accessible parking areas Apple 1 & 2.

We have six powered chairs (subject to operational availability) which are available to book in advance; we recommend one month’s notice to avoid disappointment. The weight limit for these chairs is 21 stone; you can find out more in our powered wheelchair safety guide.

All-terrain Tramper mobility scooter 

We are pleased to partner with Countryside Mobility to offer an all-terrain ‘Tramper’ mobility scooter, enabling you to discover our extensive outdoor gardens and estate. Able to take on the steeper gradients of our former clay-pit, the Tramper allows previously challenging areas to be easily explored.

As we have just one Tramper available for hire, it is strongly recommended to book ahead.

Please note there is a requirement of a CM Membership (which includes being given a short training session) before hiring a Tramper at Eden. Membership (either £2.50 for a 2 week Taster, or £10 for Annual) then gives access to Trampers across around 50 outdoor attractions around the South West. This can be purchased onsite.

Environmental aspects

Inside the tropical Biome

The biomes provide diverse growing conditions, and many plants are on display.

The Eden Project includes environmental education focusing on the interdependence of plants and people; plants are labelled with their medicinal uses. The massive amounts of water required to create the humid conditions of the Tropical Biome, and to serve the toilet facilities, are all sanitised rain water that would otherwise collect at the bottom of the quarry. The only mains water used is for hand washing and for cooking. The complex also uses Green Tariff Electricity – the energy comes from one of the many wind turbines in Cornwall, which were among the first in Europe.

In December 2010 the Eden Project received permission to build a geothermal electricity plant which will generate approx 4MWe, enough to supply Eden and about 5000 households. The project will involve geothermal heating as well as geothermal electricity. Cornwall Council and the European Union came up with the greater part of £16.8m required to start the project. First a well will be sunk nearly 3 miles (4.5 km) into the granite crust underneath Eden. Funding has been secured and drilling is set to begin in summer 2020. Eden co-founder, Sir Tim Smit said, «Since we began, Eden has had a dream that the world should be powered by renewable energy. The sun can provide massive solar power and the wind has been harnessed by humankind for thousands of years, but because both are intermittent and battery technology cannot yet store all we need there is a gap. We believe the answer lies beneath our feet in the heat underground that can be accessed by drilling technology that pumps water towards the centre of the Earth and brings it back up superheated to provide us with heat and electricity».

The Core architecture

Inspiration

The word ‘biomimicry’ describes the process of humans borrowing designs and systems from nature to create their own technology. Jolyon Brewis of Grimshaw Architects did exactly that when he based the architecture of our Core education centre on the growth blueprint of plants. He used opposing spirals mathematically based on Fibonacci’s sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 …) where every number is the sum of the previous two. The spirals on a pinecone, pineapple and sunflower, like the Core roof, usually represent two consecutive numbers in this sequence.

The brief asked the architect for the building to be fit for purpose, future-proof, made with responsibly sourced materials, energy efficient, and constructed with minimal waste.

Design and materials

The structure is made of double-curved glulam (glued laminated) timber beams (the timber is endorsed by the Swiss Forestry Stewardship Council).

We traced the supply chain of the copper for the roof from a single Rio Tinto mine, known for its high environ­mental and social standards, all the way to Eden. This unusual initiative has led to much more work on the minerals supply chain.

Elsewhere in the Core, you’ll find recycled wood, plant-based floorings (Marmoleum from flax, carpets from maize), and concrete from china-clay sand (low carbon footprint). The little green tiles are made from recycled Heineken bottles.

Special event at Porthmeor Studios, 24 Jan

Traces of Unbounded, a short talk and performance lecture

Join us at St Ives’ Porthmeor Studios on 24 January 2020 (12–1.30pm) for Traces of Unbounded, a short talk and performance lecture by two artists featured in Eden’s Unbounded exhibition.

The event is free and there is no need to book. 

Unbounded features 15 artists whose work explores some of the many layers of Cornwall’s social and environmental landscapes. Ahead of the final weekend of the exhibition, Cat Bagg of Field Notes CIC who co-curated the show with Misha Curson and Céline Holman of Eden Project will introduce two of these artists, Rosanna Martin and Laura Hopes. 

Rosanna Martin will talk about her interest in and explorations of the post-industrial landscapes of clay country, and the new works she made for Unbounded following a period as artist-in-residence at Eden. 

Laura Hopes will present Marginalia, a performance lecture which explores both the physical edgelands of Quickie’s farm and the more metaphysical ones of Virgil’s poem Georgics. Although written nearly two millennia ago Georgics prefigures contemporary ideas about biodiversity, crop rotation, and the dangers of monocultures, globalisation, colonisation and nationalism. 

Laura Hopes is an artist and researcher, based in Plymouth. She works with digital sound and film. Laura’s work uses stories and playful interventions to illuminate terrifying themes and radical and provocative re-interpretations of place. Her work has been exhibited at KARST, Peninsula Arts Gallery and SpaceX. 

Rosanna Martin is an artist whose practice explores our relationship to landscape, materials and geology through sculpture and participatory events. In 2016 she opened Brickworks, an open-access ceramic workshop in Penryn. Recent work includes Brickfield, an experimental brickworks set in Cornwall’s clay country for Whitegold, St. Austell’s ceramic festival. 

Cat Bagg runs Field Notes CIC with her curatorial partner Rosie Allen, together they explore the relationship between art, artists and communities, creating access for artists and audiences to ideas they wouldn’t often encounter. Field Notes is an itinerant contemporary art projects organisation based in Cornwall that develops and produces live events, exhibitions and commissions in unusual locations across the South West. 

This event is presented in partnership with the Eden Project, with the support of public funding by Arts Council England. 

What we can offer you

Eden boasts the world’s biggest indoor rainforest (1.5 hectares). It also has the added advantages of power, aerial platforms and is covered, meaning your production won’t be interrupted by the weather.

We also have a lush and varied selection of outdoor gardens and the Mediterranean Biome, which offers a beautiful selection of planting from the temperate regions of the world.

Eden has good vehicle access, on-site accommodation and catering and plenty of parking. Arrangements can also be made for out-of-hours shoots and for aerial filming and photography (with an abseiling camera operator, a drone or a helicopter).

Eden also boasts the longest zip wire in England, which flies over both of the Biomes. Cameras can be used on the zip wire, provided they are securely attached.

On all shoots, a member or members of the Eden team will accompany you to help ensure everything goes smoothly.

As Eden is an educational charity, we always ask for a location fee. This is negotiable — we will ask you to make us a reasonable offer.

Park-and-Ride

The Park-and-Ride buses run a non-stop service from the pick-up point at the end of the covered path from the Visitor Centre. Please ask a steward if you need assistance up this path. The buses are fully accessible and all pick up and drop off points have raised kerbs to accommodate access.

The clay pit in which the project is sited was in use for over 160 years. In 1981, the pit was used by the BBC as the planet surface of Magrathea in the 1981 TV series of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. By the mid-1990s the pit was all but exhausted.

The initial idea for the project dates back to 1996, with construction beginning in 1998. The work was hampered by torrential rain in the first few months of the project, and parts of the pit flooded as it sits 15 m (49 ft) below the water table.

The first part of the Eden Project, the visitor centre, opened to the public in May 2000. The first plants began arriving in September of that year, and the full site opened on 17 March 2001.

The Eden Project was used as a filming location for the 2002 James Bond film, Die Another Day. On 2 July 2005 The Eden Project hosted the «Africa Calling» concert of the Live 8 concert series. It has also provided some plants for the British Museum’s Africa garden.

In 2005, the Project launched «A Time of Gifts» for the winter months, November to February. This features an ice rink covering the lake, with a small café/bar attached, as well as a Christmas market. Cornish choirs regularly perform in the biomes.

In 2007, the Eden Project campaigned unsuccessfully for £50 million in Big Lottery Fund money for a proposed desert biome. It received just 12.07% of the votes, the lowest for the four projects being considered. As part of the campaign, the Eden Project invited people all over Cornwall to try to break the world record for the biggest ever pub quiz as part of its campaign to bring £50 million of lottery funds to Cornwall.

In December 2009, much of the project, including both greenhouses, became available to navigate through Google Street View.

The Eden Trust revealed a trading loss of £1.3 million for 2012–13, on a turnover of £25.4 million. The Eden Project had posted a surplus of £136,000 for the previous year. In 2014 Eden accounts showed a surplus of £2 million.

The World Pasty Championships have been held at the Eden Project since 2012, an international competition to find the best Cornish pasties and other pasty-type savoury snacks.[permanent dead link]

The Eden Project is said to have contributed over £1 billion to the Cornish economy. In 2016, Eden became home to Europe’s second largest Redwood forest (after the Giants Grove at Birr Castle, Birr Castle Ireland giantsgrove.ie)when forty saplings of coast redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens, which could live for 4,000 years and reach 115 metres in height, were planted there.

The Eden Project received 1,006,928 visitors in 2018.

Эдем это место, с серьезными амбициями, символ огромной силы людей, работающих с силами природы. Этот проект помогает людям воссоздать экологический замкнутый микромир, в будущем,  и обеспечивать, чтобы люди жили богато и были здоровые. Не сомневаюсь, что этот мир является шлюзом в отношении между растениями и людьми. А также проект Эдем является в своего рода увлекательным экскурсией в историю человечества, показывает зависимость людей от растительной жизни.

Eden Project Communities has UK wide reach and delivers initiatives that encourage public engagement and participation in positive action and create real social capital on a mass scale.  Since it began in 2009, participation in The Big Lunch, the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, has grown continually with the number of people taking part last year topping 6 million.  Alongside this we deliver initiatives that encourage connections, engage the public and help people across the UK build the skills and confidence to drive positive social action where it is needed most.We are looking for 2 new team members who love working with people and communities to join our UK wide team of Community Network Developers. A key part of your role is providing a vibrant calendar of events and activities online and offline, for the programme across a territory within England through developing our network, delivering Exchange Hub events and building support networks for those who take part in all our events. Over the coming years we are growing participation in the programme to new heights and aim to increase the social impact we have on communities and neighbourhoods all over the UK.  You’ll help us increase awareness of and participation in all aspects of the programme, including our Community Camps, courses, Exchange Hubs and The Big Lunch. The right individuals will be able to help us by leading the development of networks (Exchange Hubs) in their territory, as well as UK wide, that engage individuals and organisations and encouraging people to engage in our campaigns and do more in their communities year round. You will be part of a team of Community Network Developers, supported by our England Network Team Leader.Our ideal candidates will have at a minimum of 2 years’ experience in community development and organizing projects.  You’ll have experience of working in the community sector and in developing local networks and have strong relationship building skills.  A natural host, you’ll be familiar with setting up and running online and offline events that bring people together and can manage multiple activities running in parallel as part of our busy team.Working for the Eden Project (Charity number 1093070), roles within the programme are funded by the National Lottery through The National Lottery Community Fund.  This is a fixed term contract to the end of December 2021 subject to funding. The post holder will be based from home within the region and will be required to travel across the territory, the UK and to the Eden Project in Cornwall for key events and meetings.The closing date for all applications is 21 August 2020.  We will aim to hold the first stage of virtual interviews in the same week 26/27 August and second stage in person interview in region the following week.

Другой недостаток в том, что срок службы фольги — 25 лет (возможно, к сроку замены фольги ETFE будет изобретен новый, ещё более подходящий для данных нужд материал). Панели скреплены по периметру и наполнены воздухом, образуя таким образом большую воздушную подушку, предохраняющую оранжереи от потери тепла. Материал ETFE устойчив к большинству загрязнений, которые просто смываются дождем. При необходимости мытье наружной поверхности может быть организовано при помощи альпинистов.

Ячеистая структура: вид изнутри

В оранжереях функционирует компьютерная система климатического контроля, которая регулирует температуру и влажность в каждом куполе. Система климатического контроля была разработана и установлена компанией HortiMaX Ltd (официально называется Van Vliet Automation), которая также ответственна за текущее поддержание и обслуживание системы климатического контроля и мониторинга.

Facts and figures

• The Rainforest Biome covers about 16,000m² and is 50m high — you could fit the Tower of London inside it! The structure weighs 465 tonnes and contains 426 tonnes of air (dry air at standard temperature and pressure).
• The Mediterranean Biome covers about 6540m² and is 30m high.
• Together our Outdoor Gardens, Rainforest Biome and Mediterranean Biome cover about 13 hectares — the same as over 35 football pitches!
• We used 2,000, 11m-long rock anchors to stabilise the sides of the clay pit.
• In building the Biomes, we got into the Guinness Book of Records for using the most scaffolding, 230 miles of it!
• During the build 43 million gallons of rainwater fell in 90 days.

Eden Project North

In 2018, the Eden Project revealed its design for a new version of the project, located on the seafront in Morecambe, Lancashire. There will be biomes shaped like mussels and a focus on the marine environment. There will also be reimagined lidos, gardens, performance spaces, immersive experiences and observatories.

Grimshaw are the architects for the project, which is expected to cost £80 million. The project is a partnership with the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Lancaster University, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council. In December 2018, the four local partners agreed to provide £1 million to develop the idea, which will allow the development of an outline planning application for the project. It is expected that there will be 500 jobs created and 8,000 visitors a day to the site.

Accessibility at Eden

Your health and safety have been our top priority as we reopened the Eden Project during coronavirus. As you’d expect, we’ve had to introduce a few adjustments to our site, which change the way we ensure accessibility:

Accessible parking: Apple Car Parks are available for use as drop-off points.

Core external lift: The external lift is available for use, with a hand sanitiser installed at the entrance. 

Easy access routes: The easy access route from the Visitor Centre to the Core is not available due to the narrow footpaths between the bridge and the Visitor Centre. To help with navigating the site, areas within the Outdoor Gardens that are not wheelchair accessible are highlighted on signposts. 

Transportation: Unfortunately, due to current government guidance around social distancing, and proximity within enclosed spaces, we are unable to operate the Land Train, or our park and ride service. We will continue to review this as government guidelines change. 

In the absence of a park and ride service we invite you to use the Apple Car Parks as drop-off points. 

Access volunteers: Due to social distancing guidelines we are not able to offer visitors the assistance of access volunteers.

Accessible toilets: Accessible facilities are open in the Visitor Centre and ground floor of the Link building (in between the Biomes). A Changing Places toilet is also available in the Visitor Centre. 

Wheelchairs: 

• Manual wheelchairs: These are available in the Apple car parks and Visitor Centre. All wheelchairs are routinely cleaned by stewarding staff before after use.
• Powered wheelchairs: These must be booked ahead. 
• All-terrain Tramper mobility scooter: This is currently bookable by existing Countryside Mobility members only, and must also be booked ahead.

Eden Sessions

Since 2002, the Project has hosted a series of musical performances, called the Eden Sessions. Artists have included Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Muse, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol, Pulp, Brian Wilson, and The Magic Numbers. 2008’s summer headliners were: The Verve, Kaiser Chiefs, and KT Tunstall. Oasis were also set to play in the summer of 2008, but the concert was postponed because Noel Gallagher was unable to perform after breaking three ribs in a stage invasion incident several weeks before. The concert was instead played in the summer of 2009. 2010 saw performances from artists including Mika, Jack Johnson, Mojave 3, Doves, Paolo Nutini, Mumford & Sons, and Martha Wainwright.

The 2011 sessions were headlined by The Flaming Lips, Primal Scream, Pendulum, Fleet Foxes, and Brandon Flowers with support from The Horrors, The Go! Team, OK Go, Villagers, and The Bees.

The 2012 Eden sessions were headlined by: Tim Minchin, Example, Frank Turner, Chase & Status, Plan B, Blink-182, Noah and the Whale, and The Vaccines.

The 2013 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Kaiser Chiefs, Jessie J, Eddie Izzard, Sigur Rós, and The xx.

The 2014 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Dizzee Rascal, Skrillex, Pixar in Concert, Ellie Goulding, and Elbow.

The 2015 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Paolo Nutini, Elton John, Paloma Faith, Motörhead, The Stranglers, Spandau Ballet, and Ben Howard.

The 2016 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Lionel Richie, Tom Jones, PJ Harvey, Manic Street Preachers, and Jess Glynne.

The 2017 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Bastille, Madness, Royal Blood, Blondie, Van Morrison, Bryan Adams, and Foals.

The 2018 Eden Sessions were headlined by: Gary Barlow, Massive Attack, A Beautiful Day Out, Ben Howard, Queens of the Stone Age, Jack Johnson, Björk.

The 2019 Eden Sessions are headlined by: Stereophonics, Nile Rogers & Chic, The 100th session, Liam Gallagher, The Chemical Brothers, Snow Patrol, Kylie Minogue.

My Chemical Romance were to play the 2020 Eden Sessions in their first UK shows after a six-year hiatus, as part of their reunion tour. The 2020 Sessions were postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the closing of the Eden Project.

The 2021 sessions will be headlined by Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, The Script and My Chemical Romance
